In his newly released book, “Mirrorball - Reflections of Dance & Fashion,” J. Joseph Pastrana takes readers on a vibrant journey through the transformative intersections of dance and fashion. This compelling work, available now in hardbound editions, is published by Thane & Prose and offers a rich tapestry of historical moments in theater, motion pictures, nightlife, and style. Pastrana’s narrative intricately weaves together the stories of designers, choreographers, dancers, music stars, and DJs who have left an indelible mark on cultural history.

"Mirrorball" delves into the making of the groundbreaking dance-play "Contact," featuring firsthand accounts from renowned theater, film, music, and fashion personalities such as Susan Stroman, Adam Garcia, and William Ivey Long. The book also recounts the rebellious acts and artistic evolutions of icons like Nureyev and Graham, Saint Laurent and Halston, and the Ballets Russes and Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo.
Pastrana’s journey into the literary world began after a successful 20-year career in public relations, where he worked across various sectors including pharmaceuticals and restaurants before finding his niche in luxury and fashion. His transition from PR to writing was marked by a significant shift from short-form content to long-form narratives. "I had gotten so accustomed to short form; it was a challenge to write long form when I wrote my first book," Pastrana recalls. His meticulous approach to writing ensures that each word is carefully chosen to maintain a seamless flow for the reader.
Pastrana’s first book, “Homespun - True Tales of Tweed,” explored the storied history of tweed in fashion, featuring insights from designers and creatives across iconic menswear labels and costume design. Encouraged by the success of his debut, Thane & Prose approached Pastrana once more, leading to the creation of "Mirrorball." This second book traces the evolution of dance and fashion, illustrating how these two art forms have collided and shaped each other over the decades.
"Mirrorball" is particularly inspired by the Broadway musical "Contact," where the character "the girl in the yellow dress" epitomizes the blend of dance and fashion. "Contact the musical was inspiring when I wrote about the cast and met the directors," Pastrana shares. "I deep dived into the history of dance from all generations, learning about everything from jazz to disco and concert creatives." The book provides an insightful look into the painstaking process of costume design, highlighting, for instance, the nine attempts it took to perfect the yellow dress for "Contact."
Pastrana's dedication to capturing the essence of fashion and dance extends beyond mere historical recounting. He provides a narrative that educates while entertaining, making complex themes accessible and engaging. "Mirrorball" shines a spotlight on how designers from Chanel to Halston influenced the world of dance, from ballet to modern dance and disco, paving the way for legendary Broadway costumes.
Both "Homespun" and "Mirrorball" showcase Pastrana’s ability to intertwine personal anecdotes with broader cultural narratives, offering readers a unique perspective on the symbiotic relationship between fashion and other artistic disciplines. "Homespun" revealed the captivating stories behind tweed’s use by designers like Chanel and Vivienne Westwood, while "Mirrorball" illuminates the collaborative brilliance that defines the intersection of dance and fashion.
With “Mirrorball - Reflections of Dance & Fashion,” J. Joseph Pastrana cements his place as a storyteller who not only captures the past but also connects it to contemporary cultural currents. His work serves as both a tribute to and a continuation of the legacies of the artists, designers, and performers who have shaped our world. As Pastrana gears up for future projects, his unique voice and meticulous attention to detail promise to continue enriching the literary and cultural landscape.
